Welcome!

This biannual online journal is a vehicle to disseminate academic research papers in the form of articles based predominantly on original research. In addition to these works, other original and significant contributions (interviews, testimonials, reviews and abstracts) in the area of literacy/literacy for children, youth and adults in countries whose official language is Portuguese are welcome. The main objectives of this online journal are to bring awareness to K-12 teachers and undergraduates studying education and to spark their interest in research in this field, as well as foster their habit of reading and their production of scientific texts.

With the goal of establishing a dialogue among peers as well as with the non-academic community, this journal provides a "contact us" section through which the journal’s readership is encouraged to contribute comments, questions, concerns and praise, among other forms of feedback.

The online journal Cultivating Literacy in Portuguese-Speaking Countries involves different departments of the University of São Paulo (USP) and several national and international universities and institutions, all of whom share the objective of strengthening the “tripod” that has guided the publication of this online journal: research, teaching and extension. Thus the magazine aims to reinvent within democratic parameters the bond that historically unites the Americas, Oceania, Asia, Africa and Europe.

In addition to works written in Portuguese, we also accept written productions in Spanish, French, English and Italian. When it is written in Portuguese, our online journal will respect the cultural norms of the new Portuguese Orthography Agreement.

The online journal Cultivating Literacy is the result of a partnership between the School of Education of Eduardo Mondlane University (Maputo – Mozambique), represented by Professor Deborah Nandja, and the School of Education of the University of São Paulo (São Paulo - Brazil), represented by Professor Nilce da Silva, within the scope of the public notice pro-Africa CNPq (2004-2010). Upon the termination of the partnership in 2010, this online journal continued to be issued as a publication of the University of São Paulo.

At the moment, the online journal Cultivating Literacy receives support from CNPq, the USP Library system (USP) and the Dean of Extension and Culture at USP. The journal is evaluated by SciELO and has received a B2 grade in education and B3 in letters and in interdisciplinary modalities by CAPES.
